Dutch Golden Age The Netherlands · 17th century
In the 17th-century Dutch Republic, painters such as Frans Hals, Rembrandt and Vermeer made portraiture direct and humane: restrained palettes of black, cream and ochre, strong window light, and sitters shown as they were. Hals even painted a newly married couple, Isaac Massa and Beatrix van der Laen, at ease together outdoors.
