The tradition
Flemish Interior Northern Europe · 15th–17th century
Painters in Flanders and the Netherlands made the domestic interior a subject worthy of art. Jan van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait of 1434 placed a couple in their own room, lit by a single window, with every surface observed. Two centuries later, Dutch painters were still finding drama in quiet rooms and daylight.
We borrow its window light, its rich textures and its intimacy. Your portrait is a new work inspired by this tradition, not a copy of any historical painting.
