The story
Art Nouveau Poster France and the Czech lands · 1890–1910
Art Nouveau turned posters into art. In 1890s Paris, Alphonse Mucha drew figures inside halos of flowers, with flowing hair, fine outlines and touches of gold, and the style spread across Europe.
We borrow its line, its ornament and its calm. Your portrait is a new work inspired by this tradition, not a copy of any artwork.

The paintings behind the style
Three public-domain paintings from the tradition, as they hang in the collections that care for them. Notice the light, the dress and the way the sitters hold themselves: this is the language the portrait borrows.

Learning to see it
How to recognise it
Flowing, plant-like lines; a circular halo or arch of flowers behind the heads; flat areas of soft colour held by fine outlines; stylised, streaming hair; borders of leaves and blossoms; touches of gold. Peach, sage, cream and old gold.
Its time and place
Paris around 1895, when the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha made posters for the actress Sarah Bernhardt, beginning with Gismonda. The look, soon called Art Nouveau, spread to jewellery, glass, buildings and books across Europe until about 1910.
